If Dragon is not connected

If you lose your network connection (for example, you move out of Wi-Fi range), Dragon switches from connected “networked and local” mode to disconnected “local only” mode.

Connecting Dragon

To connect or disconnect Dragon, right-click or hold down your finger on Dragon and select Networked.

By default, Dragon attempts to use Networked and Local features as required, based on what it knows about your network connection. You can specify that Dragon use Network and Local or Local only modes in Advanced Settings.

Dragon is primarily a Windows desktop program and consequently the following limitations apply in the Windows Modern view:

  • If you switch back to Windows Modern view after Dragon switches to the Windows desktop to display one of its windows, Dragon’s windows remain visible only on the desktop. To switch back to desktop view, say “Cancel” and then “Switch to Desktop” or press the Windows key Windows 8 logo.
  • If you leave Dragon’s Settings window open when you switch to Windows Modern screens, Dragon does not display at all in the modern user interface. Close the Settings window to resolve the problem.

If your Web browser opens in Windows Modern view

If your Web browser is set to open only in Windows Modern view, all of your Web pages will display full screen, but Dragon’s Help will be hidden in desktop view. Here’s how to change your Web browser settings.

To set Internet Explorer to open on the desktop

If Internet Explorer is opening in Windows Modern, please change the settings as follows:

If you are using both Dragon Assistant and Dragon NaturallySpeaking on the same device, you may see your dictation entered twice if the Dragon NaturallySpeaking microphone is turned on.

For example, if you dictate, “What time can you be home for supper?” the following appears on the screen:

To resolve the problem, turn off the microphone in Dragon NaturallySpeaking while you are dictating with Dragon Assistant.

    • Unplug the microphone and plug it in again. If you are using a USB microphone, make sure it is plugged directly into your computer and not a USB hub.
  • For a Bluetooth microphone, go to System Preferences > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on for your computer and that your microphone is connected.

Check microphone settings

If your microphone is not shown as missing, check for problems with the microphone itself.

      1. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
      1. Click Sound.
      1. The Sound Preference Pane appears.
      1. Click the Input tab.
    1. Make sure the microphone appears in the listed devices.

If your microphone does not appear in the Sound Preference Pane, it will not work in any application.

    1. Make sure the microphone you configured with Dragon is selected, then speak into the microphone.

You should see the Input level indicator respond to the sound of your voice. If it does not respond, there is a problem with your microphone.

      • Check whether your microphone has a mute switch. If it does, make sure the mute switch is off.
      • If you are using a Bluetooth microphone, make sure it is turned on and has enough charge.
      • If your microphone can be turned off, try restarting it.
    • Try using your microphone with a different computer or device.

Important: If you change the Input volume slider while you are in System Preferences, make sure you run Microphone Setup when you run Dragon again.


Try restarting Dragon.

    1. Click the Dragon menu icon in the menu bar and select Quit Dragon.

Poor audio quality

If Dragon is able to hear your voice, but the recognition seems poor, you may have a problem with the quality of your audio input.

While dictating, watch the sound input bar in the Status Window. If it seems very high or low, try these steps to solve the problem.

Check your microphone placement

Ensure the microphone is positioned properly and has not moved away from where you originally positioned it when you ran Microphone Setup. For more information, see Microphone placement.

Recalibrate your microphone

To make sure your microphone is properly calibrated for your voice and environment, you must go through Microphone Setup for every profile and every audio source you use.

If your audio input level is too high or low, you can go through Microphone Setup again at any time by clicking the Dragon menu icon in the menu bar and selecting Improve Recognition > Microphone Setup…

Reduce background noise

For best recognition, you should always try to minimize background noise. Many microphones have noise canceling capabilities, which filter out background noise, but it’s still a good idea to keep background noise consistent.

Listen to your audio

If the above steps do not solve the problem, try dictating some text into a document, then select the text and say Play the selection. If you hear gaps in the audio, or interference such as crackling sounds, your microphone may be the source of the problem.

    • If your microphone needs to be plugged into your computer, check the connection. Try unplugging the microphone and plugging it in again. If you are using a USB microphone, make sure it is plugged directly into your computer and not a USB hub.
    • If you are using a Bluetooth microphone, make sure it is adequately charged.

If your audio quality is good, but Dragon is not recognizing your speech, try these steps.

Check your profile

If you have multiple profiles on your computer, make sure the correct user profile is open.

    • Click the Dragon menu icon in the menu bar and make sure that your profile has a check mark next to it.
  • If a different profile is checked, select your profile from the Recent Profiles list. If you don’t see your profile, click Manage Profiles… and select from the Profiles pane.

Voice Training

The more Dragon hears you speak, the better it understands you. Voice Training helps Dragon learn your speech patterns, intonations, and accent.

  • To start Voice Training, click the Dragon menu icon in the menu bar and select Improve Recognition > Voice Training…

You can use Vocabulary Training to teach Dragon how you use language. Dragon will read one or more text files you select to analyze what words you use and when, and how often, you use them.

Re-create audio source

In Dragon for Mac version 5.0.3 and later, you can improve recognition by re-creating your audio source. This will preserve all your custom vocabulary and commands, while allowing Dragon to improve how it recognizes your voice.

    1. Click the Dragon menu icon in the menu bar and select Manage Profiles…
  1. Select your profile in the left column.
    1. Under Dictation Sources, click the Add button
  1. Select the same microphone you are currently using and give it a unique name (for example, if you are using the Internal Microphone, you could name this new audio source “Internal Mic” to distinguish it.
    1. Click Continue.
    1. Preferences will close and Microphone Setup will open. Complete Microphone Setup. This step can take up to 5 minutes.
  1. Optional: Go back to the Profiles pane and delete the old audio source by selecting it from the Dictation Sources list and clicking the Remove button.

  • First stop: the microphone. Is it connected to the computer in the right microphone jack? (The red one is usually the correct one.) Try using the microphone for something else, like the Windows Sound Recorder. If you can record a sound through the microphone, then it isn’t the cause.

  • Second stop: the sound card. A poor sound card makes for poor recognition, but even poor recognition is a far cry from nothing. The sound card would have to be broken rather than just be poor quality in order to cause Dragon Professional Individual to stop dead in its tracks. Seems unlikely.

  • Third stop: Windows. Double-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and look at the Microphone Balance. Is the Mute check box selected? Deselect it, if so.

    Another possibility is that Windows (for its own unfathomable reasons) has changed your device settings — redefined your microphone to be a printer or something equally helpful. Running a microphone check will either fix the problem or give you a more specific complaint to take to Dragon Technical Support.

  • Fourth stop: microphone icon. Is Dragon Professional Individual asleep? Check the microphone icon on the Windows taskbar or on the Dragon Professional Individual toolbar. If it’s blue, it’s asleep.

If you are dictating directly into the Dragon Professional Individual document window, the preceding are all the obvious sources to check. But if you’re dictating into a different application, there are other places to look for problems.

  • Fifth stop: the application. Maybe you don’t realize which window is active, and text is actually piling up somewhere that you aren’t looking. Click in the window you want to dictate into to make sure that it’s active. If you use the keyboard to type something, does it appear where you expect it? If not, the problem has nothing to do with Dragon Professional Individual.

  • Sixth stop: the DragonBar. Look at the DragonBar and see whether the circle indicator is green in color. If it isn’t green, that means you’ve lost support for the application you’re in or you never had it.

Also, if you’re using a nonstandard Microsoft application, it might be a good idea to use the Dictation Box. If this happens inside Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Word, make sure you close them down along with Dragon Professional Individual and then restart them. This usually fixes it. Also, make sure that WinWord.exe or Outlook.exe is not running in the Processes tab of the Task Manager.

When attempting to install Dragon NaturallySpeaking on Microsoft Windows, the installation may fail. After the first “Welcome” screen, the “Next” button is not active and a message appears stating that the installation was interrupted.


During an upgrade installation of Microsoft Windows (on a computer with a previous operating system) a “Windows.old” folder is created. The “Windows.old” folder is created in the root of the Windows partition and contains the previous operating system files and other personal files.

This Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation problem may occur when the new Microsoft Windows installation was a different language than the previous Windows installation.


To bypass the installation conflict, we recommend renaming the existing “C:\Windows.old” folder.

When opening a user in Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the selected user may not open or one of the following error messages may appear:

  • “SDAPI Error”
  • “Signal Processing Error”
  • “The vocabulary you have chosen General – Large is incompatible or invalid”

Please follow the steps below to automatically restore the user file for version 7, 8, 9, 10, 11: (without Roaming enabled)

  1. Launch Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  2. From the Dragon Bar click “NaturallySpeaking > Manage Users” (in Dragon 11, click “Profile > Manage User Profiles”).
  3. Select the user file giving the error so it is highlighted.
  4. Click the “Advanced” button.
  5. Click on “Restore”.
  6. A user named “(USER-NAME) Restored1” will be created.
  7. Close out of Manage Users.
  8. From the Dragon Bar click “NaturallySpeaking > Open Users” (in Dragon 11, click “Profile > Open User Profile”).
  9. Select the restored user.
  10. Click on “Open”.
  11. The User should now load successfully.

Please follow the steps below to manually restore the user file for versions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11: (without Roaming enabled)

  1. Close Dragon NaturallySpeaking before continuing.
  2. Navigate into the Users folder in the installation folder:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking11\Users\ (by default version 11).
    • C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking11\Users (by default version 11 running on Windows Vista and Windows 7).

    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking\Users\ (by default version 9 and 10).
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking\Users\ (by default version 8).
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking\Users\ (by default version 7.3).
    • C:\Program Files\Dragon\NaturallySpeaking\Users\ (by default version 7.0).
    • C:\Program Files\Dragon\NaturallySpeaking\Users\ (by default version 6).

    • C:\NatSpeak\Users\ (by default version 4).
  3. In the “Users” folder, go into the Folder that corresponds to the user that is corrupt.
  4. Rename the “current” folder to “old”.
  5. Make a copy in the same location of the folder named “backup”.
  6. Then rename the folder called “copy of backup” to “current”.
  7. Reboot the machine and start Dragon. The User should now load successfully.

Note: If the “Application Data” folder (for Windows XP) or the “ProgramData” folder (for Windows Vista and Windows 7) are not visible in Step 2, please follow the steps below to enable them.

To enable the “Application Data” folder (for Windows XP):

  1. Click “Start > My Computer” to open a Windows Explorer window.
  2. Click “Tools > Folder Options”.
  3. Click the “View” tab.
  4. Enable the “Show hidden files and folders” option.
  5. Click “OK” to apply the changes.

To enable the “ProgramData” folder for Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  1. Click “Start > Computer” to open a Windows Explorer window.
  2. Click “Organize > Folder and Search Options”.
  3. Click the “View” tab.
  4.  Enable the “Show hidden files and folders” option.
  5. Click “OK” to apply the changes.

When the Roaming Profile option is enabled:

  1. Delete the local roaming user file.
